Your physiotherapist will complete an initial assessment with you and your child/teenager comprising two sections. First, they will ask about the presenting problems, past medical history (including birth and development history), as well as information around their school, sporting commitments and hobbies. Your physiotherapist will then complete a physical examination to assess muscles and joints which may be contributing to their pain. The physical examination may involve a number tasks such as walking, balancing, hopping, squatting and jumping, in addition to a strength assessment and range-of-movement assessment for each relevant joint. Collectively, these assessments will allow your physiotherapist to provide you with an appropriate treatment plan, which may include a combination of stretching and strengthening exercises as well as advice on pacing activity and return to sports. Your physiotherapist will then organise a follow-up appointment as appropriate.
